Tongo Island rises from the Ionian Sea 800 meters off the Albanian coast, one of four low-lying limestone formations that frame the Ksamil archipelago. The island was uninhabited until the 1960s, when state-run agricultural cooperatives planted olive groves across its eight hectares.

Today, Tongo anchors the most popular boat trip to Tongo Island with BBQ and drinks tours departing from Ksamil village. Operators run half-day circuits that combine swimming stops at the Blue Lagoon and Pigeon Cave with a midday beach barbecue on Tongo's southern shore. The island's isolation preserves a rare clarity of water—visibility often exceeds twelve meters—and its shallow bays offer protected anchorage even when the meltemi winds pick up in August. The surrounding seabed is littered with amphorae shards from Roman-era trade routes linking Butrint to Corfu.
Most Tongo Island boat excursions also weave in stops at neighboring islets and coastal caves carved into the mainland cliffs between Ksamil and Saranda. The Pigeon Cave, named for the colony that roosts in its upper chambers, extends thirty meters into the karst and glows turquoise at midday when sunlight refracts through the entrance. Speedboat tours typically depart between 09:00 and 11:00, returning by early afternoon. Beach barbecue menus lean on grilled sea bream, local sausage, and seasonal vegetables, served family-style on folding tables anchored in the sand.
The Albanian Riviera's boat tour industry expanded rapidly after 2015, when coastal road improvements brought Ksamil within three hours of Tirana. Tongo remains the most photographed stop on the circuit, its crescent beach and shallow gradient lending themselves to the kind of turquoise-gradient aerial shots that dominate travel feeds. The island is free to visit, though access is controlled by departure schedules and weather—tours cancel when wave height exceeds one meter.
